Stop Guessing and Start Watering Smarter

We’ve all been there: staring at the lawn, wondering if it’s time to drag out the hose or if the irrigation system should stay off for another day.

Most homeowners think their lawn needs the same amount of water every week. In reality, your grass’s needs change constantly based on the temperature, humidity, wind speed, and recent rainfall. Watering on a "set it and forget it" schedule isn't just wasteful—it can actually harm your lawn by encouraging shallow roots and fungal diseases.

Quick Tips for a Healthier Lawn

Before we talk about how much to water, let’s look at how you should be doing it:

  • Timing is Everything: The best time to water is early morning, ideally just before or at sunrise. This allows the blades to dry quickly as the sun comes up, preventing the damp environment that lawn diseases love.

  • The "Deep Drink" Rule: It’s better to water deeply and less frequently than to give your lawn a light sprinkle every day. A "big drink" encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil to find moisture, making your lawn much more drought-resistant.

  • Look for the Signs: Your lawn will tell you when it’s thirsty. If your footprints remain visible after walking across the grass, or if you notice a dull, silver-blue tint to the blades, it’s showing signs of drought stress.

Meet Your New Favorite Tool: Water My Yard

Because local weather is so unpredictable, I always recommend a fantastic (and free!) resource called Water My Yard.

Water My Yard uses data from local weather stations and rain gauges to calculate exactly how much supplemental water your specific zip code needs. When you sign up, they send you a weekly email with precise recommendations for your irrigation system.

How to set it up.

Don't bother downloading the app. Just hit the "Get Started" button and follow the prompts.

  • Verify your address.

  • Hit the "Personalize" button to pick your sprinklers and zones.

  • Then, enter your email address and pick a day to receive your weekly email watering recommendation.

I hope this helps
